Shore excursion in Bergen (Vestland / Norway)

Travel report with many photos of a shore excursion in Bergen, the second largest city in Norway, during a cruise on board the ship Costa Magica from Costa Cruises

Date: June 8, 2009 (day 4 of the cruise)

Weather: 6 - 13 °C, sunny

Sea: rough

Ship: Costa Magica

Cruise line: Costa Cruises (Costa Crociere)

Voyage: Norwegian fjords

The weather in Bergen is somewhat problematic: with 248 days of rain a year (as of 2005), it is the rainiest city in Europe. We were lucky, the city showed up with the most beautiful sunshine and for northern Europe quite pleasant temperatures. Bergen, with approximately 200.000 inhabitants the second biggest city of Norway, is very worth seeing.

Berth in the port

The pier for cruise ships (former ferry terminal of DFDS) on Bradbenken Street is located very close to the centre, about 10 - 15 minutes on foot from the well-known fish market.

Many market stalls offer fresh fish and seafood, but there are also fruit, vegetables, handicrafts and souvenirs. The market place Torget in Bergen is one of the most famous markets in Norway. It is visited by many tourists. There is a wide range of snacks with a large selection of smoked salmon and various types of crab.
